Does Your Child Need Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Not every child will need early orthodontic treatment—however, for those who do need it, Phase 1 orthodontic care can help guide the growth of the jaw, make room for erupting permanent teeth and reduce your child’s risk of developing orthodontic issues in the future. Some conditions require early orthodontic treatment that only an orthodontist can see, but there are also some common signs that you may notice:

  • Baby teeth that are lost very early or very late (on average, children begin losing their baby teeth around age 5. By age 13, all permanent teeth have usually erupted.)
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumbsucking after age 5
  • Speech impediments
  • Protruding teeth
  • Teeth that don’t come together in a normal manner or even at all
  • Crossbite, or shifting of the jaw when your child opens and closes the mouth
  • Crowded front teeth around age 7 or 8
